Letter From Your Department Chair

Dr. Allen Welcome to the Department Economics and Finance Department in the College of Business of Lamar University.  Our department offers three degrees:  a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Economics, a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Finance, and a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Economics and Finance. The double major in Economics and Finance is based upon a specially designed curriculum that does not require extra hours or time.  A minor in economics can be earned by any Lamar student irrespective of major or college.

The study of finance equips the student with the theoretical background and analytical tools to make intelligent and effective judgments in finance. Much of finance centers on determining the value of financial and real assets and derivatives. Terms such as puts, calls, futures, swaps, bulls, and bears lose their mystique to students grounded in the field of finance. Financial knowledge helps businesses, governments and individuals make safer and sounder decisions involving management of risks. The Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Finance gives the student a broad education in financial markets and institutions, investments, and the financial management of organizations. Graduates with a finance degree are qualified to give businesses guidance on raising additional funds, purchasing new equipment, or expanding present facilities, and granting credit. Finance graduates are ready for careers in business financial management, commercial and investment banking, investments, government finance, insurance, and real estate.

Many finance classes are held in the Fecel Financial Center, a state-of-the-art financial information lab. This facility enables students to do financial market research. In these classes students acquire experience solving real-world business problems in real time using the same sophisticated technology found in Wall Street firms. Students in the Investments class manage the Lamar University Student Managed Investment Fund, a live portfolio of approximately $500,000. Lamar Students also participate in the annual Global Asset Management Education (GAME) in New York City.

Sincerely

Larry Allen, Ph.D.
