  • 2018: Natarajan, V. & Mandal, P., Analysis and Modeling of Resilience of a Port to Natural Disasters employing Systems Dynamics Perspective: A Case Study of the Port of Beaumont PI(s), Principal Investigator, Center for Advances in Port Management, Lamar University. every measure is taken to prevent disasters, unforeseen events can occur. The aftermath of Hurricane Harvey is still fresh in the minds of the Southeast Texas community. In such a situation, the primary task of the port management authority is to be resilient and get to operational readiness in the quickest possible time. This project aims to take a holistic view of port management with a particular focus on its resilience and in identification of strategies in recovery from catastrophic events. Major components (subsystems) of port management system will be identified, in consultation with the Port of Beaumont authorities, and included in a modeling framework. Using System Dynamics methodology, a causal model of port management system will be developed and this will then be converted to a computer model, with appropriate supporting data, to test out long term impacts of catastrophic events. We will employ simulations to test different disaster scenarios. This analysis will be the focus for developing future policies for enhancing port resilience. We expect this study to generate future grant and training opportunities with ports and grant agencies.
